RD1100™ Utility Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Review

The RD1100 Utility Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) from Radiodetection is a robust and versatile tool designed for the efficient detection and mapping of underground utilities.

This product, now discontinued, offered a comprehensive solution for locating both conductive and non-conductive pipes and ducts, utilizing wide-band radar technology.

With features such as internal GPS, on-board Wi-Fi, and a high-resolution touchscreen, the RD1100 was tailored to meet the demands of professionals in the utility detection industry.

Performance and Features:

The RD1100’s wide-band sensor was a key selling point, capable of detecting a variety of materials including plastic and ceramic utilities up to depths of 8 meters (approximately 27 feet).

This capability made it an invaluable tool for utility workers needing to locate utilities without the use of tracer wire or sondes.

The high-resolution touchscreen display enhanced user experience by allowing for intuitive navigation and the ability to directly draw arrows on the screen to highlight subsurface features of interest.

Ease of Use:

One of the RD1100’s most user-friendly features was its simple screenshot capture functionality. With a single button press, users could capture the Line View on screen, complete with GPS data and any annotations made during the scan. These screenshots could be saved to internal memory as JPGs and later exported via USB or emailed through Wi-Fi connectivity.

The integration of GPS positioning with Line View data was particularly useful for geo-referencing, allowing for easy integration into mapping packages. This feature, along with the device’s ability to accurately mark utilities in a single pass, streamlined the process of utility detection and mapping.

Data Transfer and Software Compatibility:

The RD1100 supported easy data transfer through internal Wi-Fi and USB connectivity. This allowed for the quick sharing of mini projects, containing screenshots and data tables, with clients or colleagues. Additionally, the device was compatible with the EKKO_Project software, which provided enhanced data organization, analysis, and reporting capabilities. For those with the RD1500 Enhancement option, the Utility Suite software offered advanced analysis tools for even deeper data interpretation and visualization.

Design and Portability:

Designed for rugged outdoor use, the RD1100 was both lightweight and weatherproof, making it suitable for a wide range of field conditions. Its portability was further enhanced by easy on-site assembly and tool-free dismantling, allowing for compact storage and transportation. Optional larger wheels could be fitted to facilitate use across soft or rough terrain, and a variety of carrying cases were available to protect the system during transport.

While now discontinued, the RD1100 represented a significant advancement in ground penetrating radar technology for the utility industry. Its combination of wide-band radar technology, user-friendly features, and rugged design made it a highly valuable tool for professionals engaged in the detection and mapping of underground utilities. The RD1100’s ability to detect a wide range of utility types, along with its ease of use and robust software compatibility, highlighted Radiodetection’s commitment to innovation and support for the utility detection industry.
